2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming looks particularly pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
