{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him
The concerning event happened on the third rotation when safety workers were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track track officials can be authorized to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Official Investigation Underway
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, marshals were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred following that moment"
