Over 250 individuals have been taken into custody in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal border security measures, according to authority reports.

Growing Federal Operations

Charlotte marks the newest American city to undergo heightened federal involvement, following analogous operations in major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles earlier this year. Government officials have stated that those detained include persons with illegal activities and organized crime affiliates.

Regional Opposition

However, elected officials and residents have vocally opposed the detainments, which federal officials have termed "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's Democratic governor has claimed that people are being selected based on their skin color.

"We've seen covered, armed agents in military-style uniforms driving plain vehicles, focusing on American citizens based on their physical characteristics, utilizing racial profiling and apprehending arbitrary people in parking areas," declared the state governor. "This methodology is not improving our security."

Official Viewpoint

In a recently issued announcement, a federal representative asserted that the initiative has resulted in the detention of "among the most hazardous criminal unauthorized persons", including street gang participants.

Additional individuals taken into custody had been found guilty for multiple violations, including assault on law enforcement officers, driving while intoxicated, larceny and tampering with government documents, according to the department.

Local Response

The city's mayor, also a Democrat, urged federal authorities to operate with "respect" for the city's standards. She furthermore applauded those who took part in substantial numbers on Saturday to demonstrate against the federal authority's actions in the city.

"I am seriously worried by multiple of the videos I've watched," commented the city leader. "To all individuals in Charlotte who is feeling anxious or fearful: you are not isolated. Your city backs you."

Continuing Measures

Federal authorities have not revealed how long the enforcement actions will last. Chicago's enforcement began in September and persists in progress. Like other cities facing immigration enforcement, various foreign nationals in Charlotte are staying indoors due to concern about federal agents in the city, according to community reporting.

The chief executive mentioned he's observing accounts that the campaign will extend to Raleigh, a different North Carolina municipality, next.

"Yet again, I request federal agents to concentrate on dangerous criminals, not community members walking along the avenue, attending religious services, or putting up holiday decorations," he stated.
