Previous FBI chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the response acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer stated he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for various factors including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the court they aimed to present several legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a court case, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to handle the legal matter.

The former director's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into a different opponent - the New York official - failed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in good spirits as he came into the court on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was supported by his partner, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.

Upon hearing to the court read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he grasped the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he stated to the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about several months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, the director was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against the candidate were not filed, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

The federal government assert James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the upper house by claiming he had not permitted a person at the FBI to leak to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, block and delay" the committee by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

In a video the former director published to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"We have been aware for years that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Thus initiate a trial."

The accusations against James Comey surfaced after the former president posted on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and additional individuals.
