In a initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
